Applicant guide

For homeschool applicants to Queens College (CUNY), the admissions process requires verification that your home-based education meets or exceeds the standards of a traditional high school program. Your homeschooling curriculum should align with the educational requirements of your school district to ensure eligibility for a high school diploma or its equivalent. Queens College evaluates homeschool records based on these standards to fairly assess academic preparation for college-level work.

Submit a comprehensive transcript of your homeschool coursework. This transcript should:

  • Include all subjects studied from grades 9 through 12.
  • List final grades for each course.
  • Reflect a full academic load that meets or exceeds New York State graduation requirements (typically including English, math, science, social studies, physical education, health, and electives).
  • Be prepared by the parent/guardian or homeschool supervisor.
  • Submit a letter from your school district superintendent (or comparable school official) that:
  • Confirms you have completed the equivalent of a New York State four-year high school program through homeschooling.
  • This letter is essential for verifying that your education satisfies the NYS compulsory education laws, even if you have not attended a traditional school.
  • If you are currently finishing your homeschool program:
  • Provide a superintendent’s letter that certifies you are currently completing a program equivalent to a NYS high school education.
  • After completing your final year, a follow-up letter must be submitted to confirm that you have successfully completed the full program.
  • If the superintendent’s letter cannot be obtained:
  • You are required to submit a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma in place of the certification letter.
  • This ensures that students without official recognition from a school district can still prove educational competency.

You must submit a state-issued high school diploma from your state of residence if your state recognizes and certifies homeschool diplomas.

If your state does not issue such diplomas, or if you do not have one, you must obtain a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.

HSE diplomas and official score reports should be emailed to: [admissions@cuny.edu](mailto:admissions@cuny.edu)
