Applicant guide

Reed College welcomes applications from homeschooled students and understands that their educational backgrounds may differ from those of traditional applicants. While the Common Application is required for all students, homeschooled applicants must provide a few additional materials to ensure a thorough and holistic review of their academic preparation and intellectual engagement. The college encourages applicants to go beyond the minimum requirements when possible to provide a fuller picture of their academic strengths and personal qualities. No additional transcripts, course descriptions, or school profiles are required beyond the items listed above, though students are welcome to submit them if they believe it will provide helpful context for their application. Required (in addition to the Common App)

  • School Report Form completed by a parent or home-school facilitator
  • Comprehensive reading list covering all four high school years (novels, textbooks, online resources, etc.)
  • At least one recommendation from a tutor, teacher, or evaluator who is not a family member Strongly Recommended:
  • Interview with a Reed admission representative (virtual or in-person)
  • Two academic recommendations instead of one; the second may come from an employer, supervisor, or another non-family adult who can speak to traits like responsibility, creativity, discipline, or initiative Financial Aid Notes:
  • Homeschooled applicants seeking U.S. federal aid must earn a state-recognized diploma, GED, or equivalent certification to meet federal requirements
