Applicant guide

Homeschool applicants: Under Texas SB 1543 / Texas Education Code 51.9241(d), a homeschool or GED applicant with no official class rank is assigned one by UTSA comparable to the average class rank of other applicants who have equivalent standardized testing scores. Because guaranteed admission is class-rank-based, a homeschooler who wants the rank-based guarantee effectively must submit SAT/ACT; a homeschooler may still apply test-optional but is then reviewed holistically with no assigned rank.

In accordance with Texas Senate Bill 1543 (SB 1543), applicants for admission who present evidence of obtaining a non-traditional secondary education, such as homeschooling or earning a GED, will have a high school graduating class rank assigned by UT San Antonio. This assigned class rank will be comparable to the average class rank of other applicants who have equivalent standardized testing scores (ACT or SAT scores).

Homeschool transcript specification: the transcript must list all courses undertaken at each grade level, grade earned, credits earned, cumulative GPA, and a graduation date. It must be signed by a home school official or the adult person who was primarily responsible for the student's education, and should be sent to UT San Antonio electronically by the homeschool official.

Practical implication for homeschool families: UTSA's guaranteed (automatic) admission is class-rank-based — Top 25% (no test scores required) and Second 25% (with a 1170 SAT / 24 ACT floor). A homeschooler has no natural class rank, so under SB 1543 UTSA assigns one keyed to SAT/ACT-equivalent scores. A homeschooler who submits scores can therefore be placed into the rank-based guaranteed-admission path; a homeschooler who applies test-optional receives holistic review with no assigned rank and no rank-based guarantee.
