Home-schooled students represent a small but growing segment of applicants to the United States Naval Academy. While there are no additional requirements specifically for home-schooled students, the review of non-traditional academic records can be more complex. The following guidelines are provided to help you prepare a competitive application.

Recommended Academic Curriculum

To be competitive for an Academy appointment, your home school curriculum should include:

  • Mathematics: Four years, including geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. Pre-calculus or calculus is strongly recommended, provided it does not replace the foundational courses.
  • Science: One year of chemistry, ideally with a lab component.
  • English: Four years, with a focus on effective writing. Courses in English and American literature are valuable for future studies.

Additional Recommended Courses

  • Foreign Language: At least two years, including spoken practice and instruction in grammar and syntax.
  • Physics: One year, preferably with a lab.
  • History: One full year of U.S. history, plus a year of European or world history if possible.
  • Information Technology: Introductory computer and keyboarding courses, as midshipmen are required to use personal computers extensively.
Transcript Requirements

Home-schooled students must submit a transcript that includes the following:

  • Course/class title
  • Length of course and date completed
  • Grade received and grading scale used
  • Cumulative GPA
  • Curriculum or course description
  • Textbooks/materials used

Please also indicate whether your home school is recognized by your local school board or State Board of Education.

Extracurricular Activities

While many home-schooled students meet academic standards, they often have fewer documented extracurricular activities, which are important for assessing leadership potential. If local regulations allow, home-schooled students are encouraged to participate in high school-sponsored activities. However, independent documentation of extracurricular involvement is also acceptable.

Suggested Athletic Activities

  • Track/Cross Country: Compete in 5K or 10K races
  • Basketball: Join YMCA, AAU, or Boys & Girls Clubs teams
  • Soccer & Lacrosse: Play in community or club leagues
  • Swimming, Tennis, Rowing, Gymnastics: Participate in local clubs and competitions
  • Baseball: Join summer leagues like Babe Ruth, Little League, or American Legion

Suggested Non-Athletic Activities

  • Leadership roles in church youth groups
  • Junior Achievement
  • Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts
  • Boys State or Girls State programs
  • Music, theater, or arts: Participate in local bands, orchestras, or productions
